Award of the Technology Transfer Innovation Prize of the FUTUR Foundation

IWK Institute for Materials Technology and Plastics Processing in cooperation with SwissPrimePack AG wins recognition award from the FUTUR Foundation

The FUTUR Prize was awarded for the 16th time by the Foundation for the Promotion and Support of Technology-Oriented Enterprises Rapperswil / Switzerland (in short: FUTUR Foundation). IWK, together with SwissPrimePack AG, won the recognition prize with the following project:

"WoodCup - CO2 footprint reduced vending cup"

Together with project partners and with the support of Innosuisse, a team from the IWK Institute for Materials Technology and Plastics Processing, led by Prof. Daniel Schwendemann, has developed new material mixtures to reduce the CO2 footprint. The final goal of the project is a biodegradable cup for coffee machines. However, the steps taken to date, which have been honoured with the FUTUR Prize, are already impressive: For example, with the results of an initial sub-project, project partner SwissPrimePack AG has already been able to produce and sell 200 million coffee cups - the so-called WoodCup - consisting of a polystyrene mixture with wood fibre filling. Together with SwissPrimePack AG a biodegradable cup that can also withstand hot coffee is to be developed in the next few months so that in future you can go to vending machines with a clear conscience.
